About MindMax

MindMax is a desktop AI workspace for macOS and Windows for people who work through documents. It opens a folder you already have — PDFs, EPUB and Kindle books, Word, PowerPoint and Excel files, images and Markdown notes — and reads, thinks and writes with you inside it. There is no import step and no proprietary store: what MindMax produces is saved back into the same folder as ordinary files.

Why it exists

Your notes, and the two hundred PDFs you read to write them, sit in one folder — where a single AI works across both. Tools you would otherwise stitch together each hold one half of that.

MindMax puts the reading, the thinking and the writing on the same material, so a note you wrote last month and the book it came from can both be asked about, quoted and built on.

The rules it keeps

  • Conclusions you can check. Every conclusion carries verbatim quotes, and one click takes you back to the page it came from. You do not have to trust it — you can check it. See checked quotes.
  • Your text stays yours. Whatever the AI changes in your writing arrives as a tracked change you accept or reject.
  • Your files stay where they are. You pay for AI compute, not for your files. Everything MindMax produces lives in your own folder and stays readable if you stop paying.
  • Your choice of model. One subscription reaches several model families, or you can bring your own API key and use every feature without an account.

What it is not

  • Not a mobile or web app. It is a desktop application that works on a local folder.
  • Not a team workspace, a database or a collaborative wiki. It is a single-person tool.
  • Not a general-purpose assistant. It does documents.

Where it stands

MindMax is in public beta. It runs on macOS (Apple silicon) and Windows 10 or later, and updates itself in the background. The app is free; you pay only for AI work, through a plan or your own API key.

It is made by the MindMax team. Product decisions, and the reasons behind them, are written up on the blog; every release is in the changelog. To ask a question or report a problem, join the MindMax Discord — see Support.
