Why put an AI reading assistant in the browser? Start with the bookshelf
MindMax Read is an online AI reading assistant for long papers and books: open a prepared public-domain title or upload a document, then ask across chapters. It follows the book's structure to find relevant sections even when the question uses different words, then returns checked quotations you can click back to the page. Try it before installing the desktop app.
An empty upload box turns evaluation into setup: find a file, upload it, then wait to see whether the reader helps. The bookshelf lets the first useful moment come sooner.
Why should an AI reading assistant start in the browser?
Reading is one of MindMax's deepest capabilities, but a desktop app asks you to download it, open a folder, and find material before you can see how it reads. That suits a regular workflow; it is a lot for a first try.
The browser shortens that first step: choose a prepared book, inspect its guide and a sample answer, follow a quote to the passage, or upload a paper. You experience a complete reading session before deciding whether folder-level desktop work is for you.
Why is there a bookshelf before the upload box?
A sample bookshelf answers “what if I have no file ready?” Prepared public-domain books include a reading guide, chapter notes, and example questions with checked answers. You can open one without signing in or uploading anything.
The English shelf includes Pride and Prejudice; the Chinese shelf includes classics such as 《论语》. Try a question like “How does Elizabeth's view of Darcy change?” and follow the evidence across chapters. You do not need to prepare a library to see how MindMax Read handles a whole book.
What does MindMax Read do differently from a chat summary?
MindMax Read keeps the source in view. It uses the paper's or book's structure to choose sections, answers from those sections, and shows what it read. Each checked quotation opens the cited passage.
- Ask across chapters. Find where an argument shifts, how a character changes, or how two sections connect.
- See the reading path. Know which sections informed an answer and where to check them.
- Keep the result. Save an answer as a note in the online editor or export the conversation as Markdown.
An answer becomes a route back into the document, with its evidence one click away.
Is the online version limited, or still a full reader?
Its scope is narrower than the desktop app; its reading experience is still complete. In a browser you can open the original, use its guide and chapter map, ask about a whole paper or book, inspect the sections read, and click checked quotations back to the source. You can also save an answer or export the conversation.
The boundary is scope: one document at a time, without a personal library and annotations accumulating across a folder. Within it, MindMax Read is built for book-scale reading. The browser and desktop readers share the same answer-and-quotation experience; desktop adds the wider folder workflow.
Why can it answer when the question's keywords are missing?
In a book, a question and its answer may use different words. Ask where an author changes position, and the relevant chapter may discuss new evidence without using “position.” A search for matching words alone can miss it.
MindMax Read uses chapter and section structure to choose where to look, reads relevant sections in full, and can return for another if evidence is spread across the book. It shows which sections it opened and gives checked quotations to inspect. This is how it can answer a book-scale question even when the passage does not repeat the question's keywords.
This is the kind of task where the full-text-first approach matters: a book is a connected argument, not a bag of paragraphs that happen to share words with a prompt.
For us, answer quality means finding evidence across chapters, showing what was read, and making each quotation easy to check — not just producing fluent prose.
How does MindMax Read compare with ChatPDF and ChatDOC?
ChatPDF and ChatDOC both offer document questions with source references. ChatPDF describes mapping a document's content and meaning and multi-file chats; ChatDOC describes in-depth analysis of whole documents, multi-document questions, and source citations. These are useful capabilities. Their public feature pages do not provide a comparable benchmark for book-scale, cross-chapter questions.
MindMax Read's specific technical advantage is its visible reading path: map a book, choose relevant sections, read them in full, and return checked quotations. That is useful for deep questions whose evidence is distributed or whose wording differs from the source. We do not claim it wins every task or that competitors only match keywords; for a quick lookup or multiple files in one chat, another reader may fit better. See MindMax vs. ChatPDF for the broader choice.
The features described by ChatPDF and ChatDOC are drawn from their own public pages.
How can you try it with your own paper or book?
- Open MindMax Read and choose a sample book, or upload one document from your device.
- Read the opening card and chapter map to see what the document covers and where to begin.
- Ask a question in your own words. Try one whose answer may be spread across chapters, rather than a simple lookup.
- Open a quotation and read the passage in context. Then save the answer or export the conversation if you want to keep it.
The browser accepts text PDFs, EPUB, DRM-free MOBI and AZW3, Word, PowerPoint, TXT, and Markdown files. Reading a sample or uploaded file does not require an account. Asking a question requires a free account and uses the AI allowance on that account.
What does it cost, and where does the browser reader stop?
MindMax Read handles one document at a time; the desktop app works across a folder of papers, books, and notes. An uploaded file stays in the current browser. Relevant text is sent to the model to answer; MindMax does not store the source text or your questions on its servers.
For sensitive files, persistent annotations, folder-wide work, or scanned PDFs, use the desktop app. Kindle files must be DRM-free.
What is not claimed?
Checked quotations make an answer easier to verify; they do not prove its interpretation is right. Click through when a claim matters. We have not published a benchmark showing MindMax Read is more accurate than ChatPDF or ChatDOC at every task. The advantage described here is specific to deep, book-scale questions with distributed evidence or different wording.
