AI mind map tools compared
“Turn this PDF into a mind map” is three different requests: a visual summary you will look at once, a diagram you will edit and present, or a map of a book you are actually reading — one you can trust enough to think with. Each tool below is built around one of them.
- A quick summary
- Mapify or GitMind: one-shot maps from PDFs, videos and web pages.
- A diagram to present
- Xmind: a mind-map editor with AI for the first draft.
- A board you arrange
- Heptabase or MarginNote: you place the cards or highlights.
- A reading you can check
- MindMax: branches that cite the book and keep growing as you read.
Choose by what the map is for
Choose Mapify or GitMind if
- You want a quick visual summary of a PDF, a video, a web page or a recording.
- You are on the web or a phone, and will look at it once or share it.
Choose Xmind if
- The map is the deliverable — something you will restyle, rearrange and present — and AI is there to get the first version down faster.
Choose Heptabase if
- You think by arranging cards with your own hands and want PDFs and AI beside the board.
Choose MarginNote if
- You read on an iPad or Mac and want your own highlights to become map nodes, then flashcards.
Choose MindMax if
- You want every branch to be a short argument citing the sentence it came from.
- You want the map to keep growing from the passages you stop at.
- You want it as a file beside the book.
The six side by side
Rows describing other products are drawn from their own public sites. Where a site does not describe something, the cell says so rather than guessing.
| Topic | Shape | How the map is made | Checkable against the source | Where it runs | How to check for yourself |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mapify | One-shot generator | AI turns a PDF, document, video, web page, audio or image into a map | Not described on its site; it describes adding source links from online search | Web, iOS, Android, Chrome extension | Ask where a node came from in a 200-page PDF. |
| GitMind | One-shot generator plus diagrams | AI turns text, video, audio, PDFs, websites and images into maps or summaries | Not described on its site | Web, Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Chrome extension | Same test. |
| Xmind | Mind-map editor with AI | AI drafts from a prompt, file, image or link; you edit, restyle and present | Not described on its site | Desktop app and web | Generate from a PDF, then try to open the page behind one branch. |
| Heptabase | Hand-built whiteboard with AI | You place cards; AI chat answers can join the board | AI answers cite pages and blocks, per its wiki | Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android | Ask the AI about a PDF and click a citation. |
| MarginNote | Reader where highlights become nodes | Your highlights become map nodes and flashcards; AI summarises chapters and suggests quiz questions | Nodes come from your own highlights in the document | iPhone, iPad and Mac | Highlight a passage and follow its node back. |
| MindMax | AI map grown from a document | AI draws a book overview, then branches from passages you select; layout is automatic | Every card built from a document carries citation marks that open the sentence | macOS and Windows Mind-map reading → | Hover a citation mark on any card. |

What separates them in practice
A tree of headings, or a set of claims?
Most PDF-to-map generators organise what the document says into topics, subtopics and key points — quick to scan, good for a summary. MindMax’s cards are denser: each branch is a short argument rather than a keyword, better for thinking with and worse as a one-page poster. Its book overview is six cards: the question the book answers, its core claims, its key concepts as the author uses them, how it is built, routes through it, and where it is disputed.
Read a book as a mind map →Made once, or as you read?
A generator produces the map in one go, and that is the end of the AI’s part. In MindMax the overview is drawn before you read and the rest of the map grows from where you stop: select a passage and it becomes a branch, or expand any single line of a card into a card of its own.
Can you check it?
A map you cannot check against the book is a summary with extra steps. Heptabase cites in its AI chat; MarginNote’s nodes are your own highlights, so they point at the page by construction; MindMax cites every card that came from the document. For the generators, pick a branch that surprises you and see how long it takes to find the page behind it.
How quotes are checked →Who owns the layout?
Xmind, Mapify, GitMind and Heptabase let you arrange the map freely, and Xmind gives you many diagram styles. MindMax lays the canvas out automatically and does not do freehand drawing — it is not a diagramming tool.
The thinking canvas →Where MindMax is the wrong choice
- You want a poster or a slide.
A styled, hand-arranged diagram to present: use Xmind.
- The source is a video, a web page or a recording.
MindMax reads files in your folder — PDFs, ebooks, Office files, notes, images. The generators take a YouTube link.
- You are on a phone.
There is no mobile app.
- You want a summary in thirty seconds and nothing more.
A one-shot generator is the lighter tool.
Questions people ask
What is the best AI tool to turn a PDF into a mind map?
For a quick visual summary of a PDF, video or web page, a one-shot generator such as Mapify or GitMind. For a polished diagram you will edit and present, Xmind with its AI features. For a board you arrange by hand, Heptabase; for highlights that become map nodes and flashcards on Apple devices, MarginNote. For a map of a book whose branches cite the sentences they came from and keep growing as you read, MindMax.
Can I check an AI mind map against the source?
In MindMax, cards built from a document carry citation marks: hover one to see the quoted sentence in context and click to open the document there. Heptabase’s AI chat cites specific pages and blocks. The one-shot generators’ sites describe creating and exporting maps but do not describe linking each node back to a page.
Which AI mind map tools can I edit freely by hand?
Xmind, Mapify, GitMind and Heptabase all let you edit and rearrange the map. MarginNote builds maps from your own highlights. MindMax’s canvas lays itself out automatically: you expand, question and delete cards, but there is no freehand placement or drawing.
Which ones work on files on my own computer?
MindMax reads files where they are on your disk, and the map is a file in the same folder. Xmind, GitMind, Heptabase and MarginNote have desktop or tablet apps. Mapify is a web app with mobile apps and a browser extension.
Starting without giving anything up
MindMax opens the folder your books and papers are already in. Keep whichever map tool you use for posters and slides; if MindMax does not earn its place, delete it — every map it drew is an ordinary file that stays in the folder.
