MindMax vs. MarginNote
Both are for reading a textbook, paper or dense book with a map of it beside the page. In MarginNote you build the map from your highlights and turn it into flashcards, on iPhone, iPad and Mac. In MindMax the AI draws the first map before you read, every card citing its sentence, on Mac and Windows. MarginNote is stronger for memorising; MindMax for understanding the argument and doing something with it afterwards.
- MarginNote
- Highlights that become map nodes and flashcards, on Apple devices, with Apple Pencil on iPad.
- MindMax
- An AI-drawn map of the book, every card citing its sentence, on Mac and Windows; notes stay files beside it.
Choose one, or use both
Choose MarginNote if
- You read on an iPad, especially with an Apple Pencil.
- You want your own highlights to become the map.
- Spaced-repetition flashcards are central to how you study.
Choose MindMax if
- You are on Windows.
- You want the AI to lay out a book before you read it, every branch citing its sentence.
- Your work goes past reading, into translating the book or writing from it.
Use both if
- You study on an iPad, and do the heavier work — whole-book annotation, translation, drafting from a folder of sources — at a desk.
What each one covers
Rows describing MarginNote are drawn from its own website and pricing page. Each row says how to check.
| Topic | MindMax | MarginNote | How to check for yourself |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where they differ | |||
| How the map gets built | The AI draws a six-card book overview before you read; selected passages become branches; layout is automatic. Read a book as a mind map → | Your highlights become map nodes; its site lists ten mind-map styles that switch freely. | Open the same book in each and see how long until you have a map of it. |
| AI on the book | Pick a reading lens — guide, review, critique, study — and the AI annotates chapter by chapter, ending in a write-up. AI annotations → | Its site states the AI can summarise chapters, surface key terms and generate quiz questions. | Ask each for the three chapters worth reading closely. |
| Checking a claim against the page | Every AI card and note quotes its sentence verbatim, checked against the text, and opens the page there. How quotes are checked → | Nodes are your own highlights, so they point at their page. | Click back from a node to its passage in each. |
| Studying | A study lens that asks questions in the margin and reads your answers back; self-quiz skills on the canvas. | Flashcards with FSRS spaced repetition, per its site. | Look for a review queue for tomorrow. |
| Where your work lives | Ordinary files in a folder you chose: notes, maps, annotations beside each document. Your folder, opened in place → | Study sets in the app, synced through iCloud, per its site. | Open your notes folder without the app running. |
| Translation and writing | Whole-book translation against one glossary; a drafting pipeline from your sources. Document translation → | Not described on its site. | — |
| The basics | |||
| Platforms | macOS and Windows. | iPhone, iPad and Mac; Apple Pencil on iPad. | — |
| Formats | PDF, EPUB and Kindle, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Markdown, images. | Its site lists PDF, EPUB, web pages and video. | Open a .docx or a .pptx in each. |
| Pricing and AI | The app is free; AI work on a paid plan or with your own API key. Bring your own key → | One-time and subscription plans with AI credits; its pricing page says there is currently no official bring-your-own-key option. | — |

Same material, two different things to hold
Take a textbook chapter you will be examined on.
- Read and highlight; each highlight lands in the mind map.
- Drag nodes into the shape that makes sense to you.
- The ones worth remembering become flashcards that come back on a schedule.
You end withA structure you built yourself, and a review queue that gets it into memory.
- Draw the overview first: the question the book answers, its core claims, key concepts, how it is built, routes through it, where it is disputed.
- Read with the study lens on: questions appear in the margin beside the passages they are about, and you write your answer on the note.
- The closing study pack reads your answers back.
You end withNotes and a map in your folder, beside the book — not a review deck.
MarginNote is stronger for memorising. MindMax is stronger for understanding the argument, and for doing something with it afterwards.
Where MarginNote is genuinely better
- iPad and Apple Pencil.
Reading on a tablet with a pen is a different experience from a desktop, and for many students it is the better one. MindMax has no tablet or phone app.
- Spaced repetition.
Flashcards built from your highlights, scheduled for review. MindMax has nothing like it.
- A map you built.
If constructing the map is how you learn, having the AI draw it takes the useful part away.
- Map styles.
Fishbone, timeline, matrix and more. MindMax’s canvas lays itself out automatically.
Questions people ask
Is there a MarginNote alternative for Windows?
MarginNote’s own site lists iPhone, iPad and Mac. MindMax runs on Windows and macOS and covers a similar job — reading PDFs and ebooks with a mind map beside the page — in a different way: the AI draws the map and every card cites its sentence, rather than the map being built from your highlights.
Does MindMax have flashcards and spaced repetition like MarginNote?
No. MindMax has a study lens that asks you questions in the margin and reads your answers back, and self-quiz skills on the canvas, but no flashcard deck or spaced-repetition scheduler. If reviewing cards on a schedule is central to how you study, MarginNote does that and MindMax does not.
Can I use an Apple Pencil with MindMax?
No. MindMax is a desktop app for macOS and Windows with no iPad version. MarginNote supports Apple Pencil on iPad.
Does either use my own AI key?
MarginNote’s pricing page says there is currently no official bring-your-own-key option; AI runs on included or purchased credits. MindMax runs either on its subscription or on your own API key, including a local model.
Starting without giving anything up
MindMax opens the folder your PDFs and books already sit in — no import into a library. Nothing you have in MarginNote has to move. If MindMax does not earn its place, delete it; your files and every note it made are ordinary files that stay where they are.
