AI PDF readers compared
There is no single best AI PDF reader, because “read this PDF” covers four different jobs: a question you will forget by Friday, a project that ends, a document you also have to edit or sign, and a library you keep returning to for years. Each tool below is built around one of them.
- A one-off question
- ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or ChatPDF — whatever is already open.
- A project that ends
- NotebookLM: a bounded notebook, no install.
- A PDF you edit or sign
- Acrobat: a full PDF editor with an assistant on top.
- A library you keep
- MindMax: a desktop app on your folder, every answer quoting its page.
Choose by the job, not the tool
Choose ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini if
- You already pay for one.
- The question is one-off, and you want the answer where you ask everything else.
Choose NotebookLM if
- The project is bounded and the sources fit in one notebook.
- You want zero install, and audio overviews help you.
Choose ChatPDF if
- It is one file and one question.
- You are on a phone or a machine you do not control.
Choose Adobe Acrobat if
- The PDF is something you also edit, fill in, sign or send for signature — the assistant sits on top of a full PDF editor, and MindMax is not one.
Choose MindMax if
- The PDFs sit in a folder that keeps growing.
- You want annotations and notes that stay next to them.
- You need every answer to quote a sentence you can click back to.
The seven side by side
Rows describing other products are drawn from their own public sites and help centres. Where a site does not state something, the cell says so rather than guessing.
| Topic | Shape | Where the PDF lives | Install | Built for | How to check for yourself |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | General assistant | Uploaded to a chat or project | None (apps optional) | Any task, documents included | Ask about a file in a new chat a week later. |
| Claude | General assistant | Uploaded to a chat or project | None (apps optional) | Any task, documents included | Its help centre states PDFs over 100 pages are read as text only — ask about a late figure. |
| Gemini | General assistant | Uploaded to a chat | None (apps optional) | Any task; sits next to Google Drive | Its help centre allows up to 10 files per prompt — try eleven. |
| NotebookLM | Hosted notebook | Uploaded to a notebook | None | A bounded set of sources, with audio overviews | Leave a margin note on a source and look for it tomorrow. |
| ChatPDF | Browser PDF chat | Uploaded to the service | None | One file, one question; folders of a few | Its site states two PDFs a day free without registering — upload a third. |
| Acrobat AI Assistant | PDF editor with an assistant | Your file, opened in Acrobat; the assistant's work happens in Adobe's service | Desktop app, web or mobile | Editing, forms, signing, plus summaries with citations | Its site sells the assistant with some plans or as an add-on — check which one you have. |
| MindMax | Desktop app on your folder | Stays in the folder on your disk | Desktop app, macOS or Windows | A library you return to: annotate, question, translate, write The PDF reader → | Open the folder in Finder or Explorer after a month — the notes are files beside the PDFs. |

What separates them in practice
Four questions sort these tools faster than any feature list.
Does the answer point at the sentence?
NotebookLM, ChatPDF and Acrobat each state that answers carry references you can jump to. MindMax quotes the verbatim sentence, checked against the document before you see it, and flags a quote that cannot be found rather than showing it as if it held. General assistants vary by product and question. Ask each the same question about the same file and try to land on the page — it takes two minutes.
How quotes are checked →Does anything stay after the session?
In the upload tools, what persists is a chat or a notebook inside the service. In Acrobat, it is whatever you edit into the file. In MindMax, it is highlights and margin notes anchored in the document, plus notes, translations and drafts saved as files in the same folder, which later questions can draw on.
How does it handle a whole book?
Most of these are built for a paper, a contract, a report. MindMax navigates a long document by its own chapters, can be handed a book with a reading lens and work through it chapter by chapter, and can translate all of it in one run against one glossary.
AI annotations →Where does it run?
Six of the seven do their AI work in their own service, so the document is sent there. MindMax reads files where they are; the passages the AI needs are sent to the model you choose, and with a local model through your own key nothing leaves the machine.
Bring your own key →Where MindMax is the wrong choice
- You need to edit the PDF.
Filling forms, signing, merging, redacting: that is Acrobat’s job. MindMax reads and annotates PDFs and can revise a PDF’s text into an editable copy, but it never changes the PDF itself.
- You read on a phone.
There is no mobile app and no web version.
- It is one question about one file.
Installing anything for that is overkill; any of the hosted tools above will do.
- You want a general assistant.
MindMax is about documents. If most of what you ask is not, keep the assistant you have and use this alongside it, or not at all.
Questions people ask
What is the best AI tool for reading PDFs?
It depends on the job. For one question about one file, a general assistant you already pay for or a browser tool like ChatPDF is enough. For a bounded research project with no install, NotebookLM. If you also need to edit, fill or sign the PDF, Acrobat. If the PDFs are a library you keep coming back to and you need quotes you can click back to a page, a desktop app that works on your own folder, such as MindMax.
Which AI PDF readers give citations you can click back to the page?
NotebookLM, ChatPDF and Acrobat AI Assistant all state on their own sites that answers carry references you can jump to. MindMax quotes the sentence verbatim, checks the quote against the text before showing it, and opens the page with the sentence highlighted. General assistants vary by product and by question.
Can any of them annotate the PDF itself?
Acrobat is a full PDF editor, so you can mark up the file by hand. MindMax keeps highlights and margin notes anchored in the document, and its AI annotation lenses leave notes on the passages they are about. The upload-and-ask tools are built around asking questions rather than marking up the file.
Which ones work without uploading my files to a service?
MindMax reads files where they already are on your disk; only the passages the AI needs are sent to the model you choose, and with a local model nothing leaves the machine. The other six run their AI in their own service, so the document is sent there — Acrobat included, even when you open the file in its desktop app.
Starting without giving anything up
MindMax opens the folder your PDFs are already in — no import, no conversion, no second copy. If it does not earn its place, delete it; your files, and every note it made, stay exactly where they are.
