Markdown to Word

Markdown in. A Word file you would actually send out.

Paste Markdown or open a .md file, see it as the document it will become, and export a .docx — with real tables, highlighted code and equations Word can edit. No command line, no install.

\[ \hat{\beta} = (X^\top X)^{-1} X^\top y \]

Markdown to .docx in five steps

  1. Open the web editor

Go to mindmax.me/write. No install, no account.

  2. Bring the Markdown in

Paste it, or use the open-file button in the document list on the left to open a .md, .markdown or .txt file from your computer.

  3. Check it as a document

What you see is what will be in the Word file: headings, lists, tables, code, equations and diagrams, laid out as they will print.

  4. Edit if you need to

Fix a heading level, tidy a table, add a line. In Chrome and Edge, a file you opened can be saved back to the same .md on your disk (the browser asks for permission first).

  5. Export Word

Click Export Word at the top right for the .docx. Download Markdown gives you the edited .md back.

See it before you convert it

A command-line converter turns Markdown into Word blind: you find out what happened when you open the file. Here the document is on screen first, in the layout the export reproduces, and you fix it before it leaves.

  • The editor and the Word export are laid out from the same rules, so a table that fits on screen is the table that lands in the file.
  • Maths is converted into Word’s own equation format rather than into images, and equations written between \( \) and \[ \] are recognised as well as dollar signs.
  • Code blocks keep their highlighting, and Mermaid diagrams are drawn and embedded as pictures.

What it understands

CommonMark and GitHub-flavoured Markdown, plus the extras AI assistants and note apps use.

Structure

Six heading levels, ordered, unordered and task lists, quotes and callouts.

Tables

GitHub-style tables, with alignment, become Word tables.

Maths

Inline $…$ and display $$…$$, plus \( \) and \[ \], to native Word equations.

Code

Fenced code blocks with syntax highlighting.

Mermaid

Diagrams written in Mermaid, drawn and embedded as pictures.

Highlights, links, images

Highlighted text (==like this==), links, and images you paste or drop in.

Where it gets hard

  • Images on your disk are not read from a link

An image referenced by a path, like ![](images/chart.png), points at a file the browser cannot open by itself. Paste or drag the image into the document instead, and it is embedded in the export.

  • Links between notes stay as text

Wiki-style links such as [[Another note]] show as plain text. Linking a whole folder of notes together is the desktop app’s job.

  • The document lives in this browser

What you paste is kept in this browser’s storage. Clearing site data or switching browsers means it is not there; a file you opened from disk is still on disk.

  • Export goes one way

Edits made later in the .docx do not come back to the Markdown. Finish here, then export.

Common questions

How do I convert a Markdown file to Word without installing anything?

Open mindmax.me/write, open the .md file with the open-file button (or paste its text), and click Export Word. The .docx is generated in your browser.

Is this the same as Pandoc?

It solves the same problem without a command line. The difference is that you see and can edit the document before export, and equations become native Word equations. Pandoc handles many more input and output formats; this does Markdown to Word, PDF and rich text.

Do equations become real Word equations?

Yes, editable ones — not images. Both dollar-sign and bracket delimiters are recognised.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The file is read in the browser, kept in the browser’s storage and converted there.

Can I edit the Markdown and save it back?

Yes. In Chrome and Edge, a file opened from disk can be written back to the same file as you edit, once you give the browser permission. Elsewhere, use Download Markdown.

Is there a file size limit?

No fixed limit; it is a document editor running in your browser, so a very long document is as fast as your browser makes it.

Open the .md. Hand over a .docx.
